Bush Crimes Commission date & place
Dear friends,
"When the possibility of far-reaching war crimes and crimes against humanity exists, people of conscience have a solemn responsibility to inquire into the nature and scope of these acts and to determine if they doin fact rise to the level of war crimes and crimes against humanity".
The Commission of Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity committed by the Bush administration will be held October 21-23 in New York City, sponsored by the Not In Our Name statements of conscience (www.nion.us). Opening sessions will be in the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Center on West 34 Street.
The holding of this tribunal will both frame and fuel a discussion that is urgently needed in the United States: Is the administration of George W. Bush guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity? In line with these objectives, we take very seriously the critical necessity for rigor and substance in the presentation of the evidence, that is, it is not a political rally or conference.
The issues examined will include invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, torture and indefinite detention, catastrophic policies on global warming, and a religious fundamentalist-based attack on global public health (see the Commission Charter at www.nion.us/commission.htm).
While the Commission is independent of any other program, it is the growing climate of absolute hatred toward the Bush administration that makes the Commission both feasible and necessary on an accelerated timetable.
At this point, seven weeks out, we need to raise $30,000 just for the venue. In addition, there will be even greater costs to bring in witnesses, to stream the proceedings on the internet internationally, and to break the whole story into the media.
We urge that you contribute as generously as you can. Contributions can be made on the web site through Pay Pal (www.nion.us/NSOC/sign.htm), or you can your mail check made out to Not In Our Name, to Not In Our Name, 305 West Broadway, PMB 199, New York, NY 10013.
We urge you to read the Commission Charter and think about creative ways to make this vision a reality, through recommending people you know in these spheres who can contribute to the prosecutions, and ways and people to promote this in the media. We are also looking for volunteers for a whole range of production tasks, from registration to audio engineers.
General correspondence to the Commission should be sent to commission@nion.us.
